Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics

Required Courses:

Math 140 - Calculus I Math 345 - Probability and Statistics I
Math 141 - Calculus II Math 360 - Abstract Algebra I
Math 240 - Calculus III Math 361 - Abstract Algebra II
Math 260 - Linear Algebra I Math 450 - An Introduction to Real Analysis
Math 280 - Introduction to Proofs Phys 113 - Fundaments of Physics I
Math 310 - Applied Ordinary Differential Equations CS 110 - Introduction to Computer Programming
Math 320L - Applied Discrete Mathematics Additional requirements (see below).

Electives:
Besides the required courses, a student must take three other Mathematics courses, numbered 300 or higher.

Notes:

Science Courses:
For the Bachelor of Science degree, in addition to the above requirements, a student must take 4 (four) science courses and a lab. One of these courses must be PHYSIC 114. Each course must be part of the requirements for the major in the department offering the course. Courses that are acceptable include:

  • Biology, Chemistry, and Physics: All courses required for the respective majors.
  • Psychology, Engineering, and EEOS: Selected courses (consult with your advisor).

Further Rules and Requirements:

  • A minimum of a 2.0 GPA (a C average) in the major is required for graduation. Only courses taken at UMass Boston are included in computing the average.
  • No requirement may be taken pass/fail.
  • At least 4 (four) Mathematics courses numbered 300 or higher must be taken at UMass Boston.
