Length minimizing geodesics and conjugate points in two-step nilmanifolds

Abstract: In the context of two-step nilpotent metric Lie groups, I'll give an (intuitive) overview of some recent results concerning the related problems of calculating the first conjugate point (if it exists) of a geodesic and determining the length minimizing geodesic between two points.

The presentations cover a large variety of topics and are intended for a general math audience. The seminar is organized by Prof. Alfred Noël and we usually meet Monday afternoons, from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm.
