Can Mathematical Thinking Be Taught in the K-12 Classroom?

Abstract: In the late 1980's a number of deficiencies in K-12 mathematics education in the US became apparent. Remedies were proposed and then implemented (not only in the US, but also in several other countries)with the explicit aim of fostering a deeper mathematical understanding. Critics are questioning the claims of the reformers:are they really teaching mathematical thinking?

The presentations cover a large variety of topics and are intended for a general math audience. The seminar is organized by Prof. Alfred Noël and we usually meet Monday afternoons, from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm.
