Surprising Connections: Euler, Infinite Series, and the Infinitude of Primes

Abstract: In this talk I will give a brief historical account of Euler's work on infinite series and its impact on other branches of mathematics. For example, I will show that by proving that the harmonic series diverges, Euler was able to show that there are an infinitely many prime numbers.

Remark: On Saturday, April 21, four UMass students spoke at a regional mathematics conference at Siena College in Loudonville, NY. By popular demand, they will reprise their presentations in our seminar.
The presentations cover a large variety of topics and are intended for a general math audience. The seminar is organized by Prof. Alfred Noël and we usually meet Monday afternoons, from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm.
