Upcoming Events:UMBUMC: The Math Club is pleased to announce the establishment of a new undergraduate outlet for math exploration. The UMass Boston Undergraduate Mathematics Colloquium (UMBUMC) will kick off the semester this Monday, April 14th, at 2:30 pm, with a talk by math major Thomas Folz-Donahue on fractal dimensions. There will be several more talks throughout the semester:
All talks are at 2:30 pm in room S-2-65. Refreshments will be served at each talk. Many of the talks are aimed at a general audience, and all students, staff and faculty are encouraged to attend. Anyone interested in giving a talk now or in the future should contact the Math Club (contact info below). 5/8 - Clay Public Lecture Series: The Clay Public Lecture is a mathematical talk aimed towards a general audience. The Math Club is encouraging people to attend this spring's lecture, "The Music of the Primes," given by world renowned mathematician and author Marcus du Sautoy. For more information on the talk, follow this link. 5/30 & 5/31 - MAA Regional Meeting The regional meeting of the Mathematics Association of America is a great chance for math undergraduates to experience the setting of a professional math conference. Many of the talks are aimed at undergraduate students, and there are even opportunities for undergraduates to present their own talks and research. If you are interested in attending, please contact the Math Club at the link below. News:The Math Club has had a busy year. This fall several of our students attended the Bentley College Math at Work conference, sponsored by Bentley's Math Department. We sent several students to the Undergraduate Women's Conference in Mathematics at University of Nebraska. We have begun upper level tutoring and mentor programs for math majors. And our vision of community service was realized when the Math Club team up with non-profit educational consultants TERI to help run a college exploration program for forty students the 4th grade class of Channing Elementary School. The Math Lounge:The new Math Lounge on the third floor of the Science Building has become the center of a small but active community of undergraduates interested in studying and discussing mathematics. Feel free to stop by if you have questions about your classes, your major, or your mathematics. At any given moment throughout the day, the lounge is populated with 1D6+1 helpful and friendly students engaged in mathematical discussion. When all else fails, the plentiful coffee and microwave popcorn helps to bring students around at all times of the day. Officers of the Math Club
