Overview:

Representation Theory has become one of the most ubiquitous branches of Modern Mathematics and plays a fundamental role in several of the latest important mathematical discoveries. These include Wiles's proof of Fermat'st last theorem, Laurent Lafforgue's proof of certain conjectures of Langlands, Andrei Okounkov's connections between probability, representation theory and algebraic geometry, and several other groundbreaking results. It shares deep links with classical branches such as Fourier analysis, the theory of spherical harmonics, and other aspects of special functions. It enters the fields of symplectic geometry and microlocal analysis and has many applications to ergodic theory, geometric integration theory, classical and quantum physics, and mathematical chemistry.

This conference will provide a forum for discussing the latest advances in the field, including a new algorithmic approach that has the potential to give results for the largest exceptional group E_8. The conference will attract a wide range of researchers and advanced graduate students who will be exposed to sophisticated software and computational techniques that will enhance their capacity to investigate conjectures and carry out complex simulations.

Principal Lecturer:

The principal lecturer, David Vogan of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences (1996), is a world-renown mathematician who has been making important contributions to the field for the last thirty five years. He is also the recipient of the American Mathematical Society 2011 Conant prize. He and his collaborators have published over 65 research papers, books and other scholarly works. He has trained more than thirty graduate students and mentored countless other mathematicians. He has lectured all over the world and leads the Atlas of Lie Groups and Representations pro ject. He will deliver ten one-hour lectures.

• Open problems

Additional Lectures:

In addition to the ten principal lectures, there will be several one-hour talks, discussions, and software demonstrations by other well regarded researchers in the field. These talks will complement the material presented by Vogan and may provide new research directions.
