Text : Calculus 6th Edition by JAMES STEWART Publ:. THOMSON Brooks/Cole and Accompanying Student Solution Manual.

Calculus of functions of several variables. Topics include vector functions, partial derivatives, transformations, the derivative as a matrix, chain rule, directional derivatives, gradients, second derivatives; and multiple integrals, substitution rule, and Jacobians. Please note: Because MATH 240 is the final part of a three-semester calculus sequence, it should be taken as soon as possible after MATH 141.

Prerequisite: Calculus II or equivalent.

Material to be covered:

Chapters 13 – 16. We may have to omit a few sections due to time constraint.

Homework assignments will be given at the end of each class. However, homework assignments will not be collected but will be partially discussed in class. IF YOU DO NOT DO YOUR HOMEWORK YOU WILL ALMOST SURELY FAIL THIS CLASS.

Schedule:

Weeks 1- 3:  Sections 13.1 – 13.6

Weeks 4- 5 : Sections 14.1 - 14.3, 15.1

Weeks 6 - 7 : Sections 15.2 – 15.5

Weeks 8 - 9: Sections  15.6 – 15.8

Weeks 10 - 12: Sections 16.1 – 16.7

Weeks 13 - 14: Sections: 16.8 - 16.9

Week 15: Review

Exams: There will be 3 one-hour exams and a cumulative final exam :

Exam I :  Thursday, February 28

Exam II : Thursday, April 3

Exam III: Thursday, May 1

Grading Procedures: Each exam is worth 20% of your final grade. High Attendance  & Class Participation 10%. The Final exam will count for 30%.

THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUP EXAMS.

STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MATERIAL COVERED IN CLASS.
