Text: A first Course in Abstract Algebra by John B. Fraleigh Seven edition Pbl. Addison Wesley

Course Description: Introduction to ring and field theory. Topics include: group action, commutative rings, ideals, integral domains, polynomial fields, the theory of extension fields, vector spaces, Galois groups, and the fundamental theorem of Galois theory. Applications include insolvability of certain higher degree polynomials, and other topics as time permits.

Pre-Requisites: MATH 360.

Material to be covered:  We hope to cover sections 16-23, 36, 26, 27, 29 – 33, 48– 51, 53, 54.

There will be 9 to 10 homework assignments, a midterm exam, and a final exam.

The homework assignments should be clearly written. I expect proofs to be written in correct English. I will not grade messy manuscripts. Students are strongly urged to learn LaTeX so that they can use it to typeset their work.

Midterm: (1 hour: 15min exam) Wednesday March 12, 2025

Grading Procedures: Homework 35%, Midterm 30%, Final 35%.

THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUP EXAMS.

STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MATERIAL COVERED IN CLASS.
