Updated: June 26, 2013; 7:56 pm. Please see the NOTE on unfinished homework, below. Please see HW#4, below. To: Prof. Dick's Math129 NAVITAS class. I will be your teacher for this week. Dr. Leisinger Department of Mathematics Office: Science-3-092 Cell phone (emergencies only) 617-894-3526 email: leisinger1@gmail.com DO NOT email me at my UMB email. I almost never read it. PLEASE email me if you have any questions or problems. I will gladly give hints or suggestions on the homework problems. I am not going to post office hours right now. ===================================== Homework assigned Monday,6/24/2013: ===================================== HW#1: Work sheet on Difference Quotient, on this website: DifferenceQuitient_129.pdf (or, alternately, the sheet handed out in class, which is quite similar. The problems are almost the same.) HW#2: the ten problems on Linear Programming, handed out as photocopies in class today. You may use "GraphPaper.pdf" on this website if you need graph paper. If you did not receive the handout because you were not in class, please contact another student and photocopy their copy. I most likely will not be on campus tomorrow, so you can't depend on me to give you another copy. HW#3: Solving systems of linear equations using these three methods: Method 1. Graphing Method 2. Substitution Method 3. Elimination Method 4. Cramer's Rule (the method of determinents). I have only taught Method 4 for 2 equations and 2 unknowns. It may be used for (say) 3 equations and 3 unknowns, etc, but I did not teach how to calculate the 3x3 determinant. I have posted a few problems to be solved by ALL of these methods. It is "LinearSystemsHW.pdf" on this website. ===================================== Quizzes to expect on Wednesday, June 26: A. A quiz in which you solve and check several simultaneous equation systems (like homework #3 above). B. A quiz on the Difference Quotient. (like HW #1 above) C. A quiz on Linear Programming. I will give you two or three problems to solve. These problems will be easier (fewer English words) than the problems on the homework assignment. ===================================== NOTE: those who have not finished the homeworks assigned on Monday 6/24 may finish these homeworks and turn them in by July 5, 2013 to my mailbox in the Math department. ===================================== Additional homework due in my mailbox next week (say, by July 5) HW#4: Carefully read and study the file Factoring_Anything.pdf and work the problems on the back. Keep a record of your answers. Photocopy the second side of the sheet with your answers, and turn this HW in to my mailbox in the Math Office by July 5, 2013. Some of these problems are easy. Some are more difficult. Please check your answers by multiplication. Example: Problem: x^2 - 36. Factored answer: (x-6)(x+6). Check: (multiply) ======================================
