Mathematics Colloquium - Fall 2009
Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Abstract:
This talk will discuss existing and emerging applications of algebraic topology. Though often thought to be among the least applicable branches of Mathematics, topology appears to be strangely wellsuited for modern challenges in robotics, data analysis, sensing, and communications. The talk will not require background in either algebraic topology or its many applications. Ghrist, one of the world’s leading applied mathematicians has won a Career Award from the National Science Foundation and was named by Scientific American as one of the 2008 top 50 scientific innovators. Ghrist received his Ph.D. in 1995 (Topology) and M.S. in 1994 in applied mathematics from Cornell University.[Math-CS-Physics Colloquium]
