Abstract:
In the late 1980's a number of deficiencies in K-12 mathematics education in the US became apparent. Remedies were proposed and then implemented (not only in the US, but also in several other countries)with the explicit aim of fostering a deeper mathematical understanding. Critics are questioning the claims of the reformers:are they really teaching mathematical thinking?
