New compactifications of moduli stacks and the GJV conjecture

Abstract: Moduli spaces in algebraic geometry parametrize objects varying in families. The compactifications of the moduli spaces of curves and maps were constructed last century and helped give answer to enumerative questions that had been open for decades by means of Gromov-Witten theory. In this talk I will discuss these compactifications and the enumerative significance of Gromov-Witten invariants in some cases. I will also discuss work in progress with Barbara Fantechi toward the construction of a new compactification of the Picard stack over the moduli space of stable pointed curves.
