Abstract:
A regular polytope is a highly symmetric n-dimensional geometric figure. Familiar examples include the regular polygons and Platonic solids. This talk will present a quick way of computing the number of symmetries of a regular polytope from the symmetries of its faces. The proof relies on a simple application of the theory of G-Sets and orbits of a group action. On Saturday, April 21, four UMass students spoke at a regional mathematics conference at Siena College in Loudonville, NY. By popular demand, they will reprise their presentations in our seminar.
